ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies in Practice
AN INTENSIVE PROGRAMME FOR EXPERIENCED COACHES, MENTOR COACHES AND COACH EDUCATORS
Mentor coaching is more than feedback on a single recording.
It is a distinct professional discipline that brings together precise observation of coaching practice, formative assessment of competencies, developmental feedback and support for a coach’s learning over time.
The ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies in Practice programme is designed for experienced professionals who already support the development of coaches or are preparing to provide mentor coaching in accordance with the new standards of the International Coaching Federation.
During the programme, you will explore the six ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and learn how to apply them in practice. We will work with contracting, observation of an actual coaching conversation, documentation of competency evidence, developmental feedback and support for the coach’s continued learning.
The programme will help you align your professional experience with the new professional framework and develop your own approach – one that is professionally grounded, ethical and collaborative, while respecting the unique style of the coach you mentor.

We are preparing to submit the programme for ICF Continuing Coach Education accreditation.
Who the programme is for
THE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR:
- experienced coaches who would like to begin providing mentor coaching;
- active mentor coaches who want to align their practice with the new ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies;
- coach educators and faculty members of coach education programmes;
- observers and assessors of coaching practice;
- professionals responsible for mentor coaching in ICF-accredited coach education programmes.
The programme is not designed as an introductory course for beginning coaches. It assumes an understanding of professional coaching and the ICF Core Competencies, as well as experience in mentoring, coach education, observation of coaching practice or the provision of developmental feedback.
Participants are expected to have:
- an active ICF credential;
- experience in mentoring, coach education, observation of coaching practice or the provision of developmental feedback;
- completed the relevant ICF evaluation training for the credential level at which they wish to provide mentor coaching, no later than before the in-person workshop.
Depending on the target credential level, this means:
- ACC BARS Training,
- PCC Markers Training,
- MCC BARS Training.
This programme does not replace these evaluation training courses.
WHAT YOU WILL GAIN FROM THE PROGRAMME
BY THE END OF THE PROGRAMME, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
explain the purpose of mentor coaching and its place in the development of a professional coach;
distinguish mentor coaching from related professional roles;
contract for an individual or group mentor coaching process;
use the ICF Core Competencies and credential-level standards as a framework for formative development;
distinguish between observation, interpretation, personal preference and professional judgement;
identify specific evidence of strengths and development opportunities;
formulate feedback that is clear, respectful and useful for development;
balance partnership with the professional authority of the mentor coach;
work consciously with the power and influence associated with the role;
support reflection and the design of specific developmental experiments;
distinguish between the purposes of the Session Observation Form and the Competency Review Form;
design the basic architecture of a longer-term mentor coaching process;
recognise your own biases and culturally conditioned interpretations;
identify your own strengths and further development needs in the role of mentor coach.
HOW THE PROGRAMME WORKS
- 1. Online self-study
Before the in-person workshop, you will complete 2.5 hours of compulsory online preparation.
The online self-study takes place in the VIA Institute learning environment, where you will find videos, study materials, forms and short guided activities. We will send you access details two weeks before the in-person workshop.
- 2. Intensive liveworkshop
The full-day workshop provides space to apply the knowledge gained through online self-study. We will work with the new ICF forms and examples of coaching practice, calibrate our observations together and practise delivering developmental feedback. Reflection, sharing experience and learning through dialogue with other participants will form an important part of the day.

The final online session will provide space to reflect on the practical assignment, identify shared themes, transfer learning into your own practice and bring the programme to a conscious close.
Our approach to learning
THE PROGRAMME IS BUILT AROUND ACTIVE, EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING.
We combine:
- video-based learning and guided self-study;
- concise expert input;
- analysis of recordings and transcripts;
- collaborative calibration of observation;
- practical training in developmental feedback;
- work in small groups;
- peer feedback;
- individual reflection;
- a final applied assignment;
- shared integration of learning.
Programme fee
Introductory group fee = EUR 499,- excluding VAT
When two or more participants from the same education provider enrol, a reduced fee of EUR 449,- excluding VAT per participant applies.
The fee includes:
12 hours of specialised mentor coach education;
videos and study materials in the online learning environment;
work with the current ICF forms;
an intensive in-person workshop;
a final online Integration Circle;
brief feedback on the final practical assignment;
refreshments during the in-person workshop.
The fee is final. There are no additional compulsory charges for any educational components, materials, feedback or final assessment.
We are preparing to submit the programme for ICF Continuing Coach Education accreditation. Information about the allocation of CCE credits will be confirmed to participants once the accreditation process has been completed.
Completion of the programme does not in itself confer eligibility for the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization. To obtain the specialization, applicants must also demonstrate that they meet the additional requirements set out in the current ICF criteria.
The programme provides a coherent course of mentor coach education designed in alignment with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies and the educational requirements of the Credit for Prior Learning route.
